Before the villas wake, the fishermen of Mayungu are already out at sea. Wooden boats leave the bay at first light, and the rhythm of the village follows the tide, as it has for generations.
A day set by the tide
The boats return as the water allows, nets heavy and the hulls loud with the catch. Some of it goes to the village, some to the market and some to the kitchens along the bay.
On the table by lunch
The beach restaurant builds its menu around the morning’s fish. By lunch the catch is on the grill, served under the thatch with lime, coconut and coastal Swahili spice, a few steps from the water it came from.
Seeing it for yourself
Early risers can watch the boats come in from the beach club. Ask the team about the tide, and take a coffee down to the water.
