Maasai hosts in red shukas singing and jumping to welcome guests at the camp

A welcome in song

At Mara River Camp, the welcome begins at the gate. Maasai hosts in red shukas, the wrapped cloth worn across the shoulders, sing guests in from the vehicles. Then the jumping begins.

The adumu

The adumu is the Maasai jumping dance. One by one, the dancers rise straight up from the ground, higher with each jump, while the others keep the song going around them. Guests are welcome to join in.

Walking with the people who know the land

Maasai guides lead the walks and village visits from the camp. They read the grass, the tracks and the birds the way most of us read a page, and they share it at walking pace. A morning in the Maasai village is arranged with them, on the village’s own terms.

In the evening

On some evenings the singing returns, around the fire on the lawn above the river. Ask the camp hosts which nights, and keep a seat close to the fire.
